Kolkata has always topped the list of cities offering affordable yet delicious foods. The streets of Kolkata is dotted with thousands of restaurants and food stalls that offer simply out-of-the world culinary experience. Yet, high profile restaurants have always found some takers in the city. The likes of Oh!Calcutta, Mainland China, Peter Cat, Barbeque Nation have seen growing number of visitors over the year. Love for food among the people of the city has never let down anybody. That is why ‘Taj’ have not missed the opportunity of bringing Masahari Morimoto to the city.
Morimoto is none other than the principal Chef in the costliest Restaurant of Mumbai – ‘Wasabi by Morimoto’ (The only Indian restaurant to feature in World’s top 50) located at the Taj Mahal Palace. It is true that Kolkata is yet to taste the best of Japanese food as there are not many restaurants serving authentic Japanese food but having Morimoto in the city is an opportunity never to miss. He is certainly the best Japanese Chef in the country. At the time of opening his signature dining at the Taj Mahal Palace he was the first Executive Chef at the New York Nobu – In fact, The Taj was pursuing Nobu to open an outlet there which failed.
Morimoto, over the year, has developed his own style of Japanese preparation but all his dishes present a flavor of The Nobu. His signature – The White Fish Carpaccio is the most delicious item in his kitchen. A wide range of Sushi, Sashimi, Robatayaki, Teppanayaki fills his Menu – and all are worth a try. You should also keep your wallet going for the desserts because those too are designed by Morimoto in authentic Japanese style. The Wasabi by Morimoto gives a pleasure of watching the chef at work and trust me his work with the knife will completely change your idea of cooking. Naturally, he got the title – the iron chef.
In my opinion Wasabi by Morimoto is more like a mediocre movie by with huge star cast and the biggest drawback is certainly its cost. If you can spend Rs. 7500/- you can get a dish of assorted delicacies specially customised by Morimoto. Even some sushi or sashimi you get in any other restaurant might taste better than his – this counter is taken care of by his Japanese assistant. Still, like every multi-starer movie is a worth watch, Wasabi by Morimoto too is worth a visit. Most importantly, Kolkata does not get much opportunity to host such a superstar Chef. Despite the cost factor, no other restaurant gives such level of Japanese Culinary experience- and who knows he might be having some surprise for the City of Joy.
The Wasabi by Morimoto will be in Kolkata between 15th-19th September 2017 at the Souk at the Taj Bengal Hotel. The opportunity is rare and is highly recommended to give a try.
